TOP Soccer Mission Statement
The New Hyde Park Wildcats Soccer Club runs a program for children with special needs called TOP Soccer (The Outreach Program for Soccer). The object of our program is to offer children with special needs an opportunity to participate in a soccer program. Our program began in the fall of 1991. We play outdoors each fall and spring. It is open to any child who cannot participate in our intramural program. Players are required to fill out an application, which includes a doctor's release. We provide a uniform (shirt, shorts and socks), but ask the players to provide their own cleats (or sneakers) and shin guards.
We have no geographical boundaries. While most of our players come from Nassau, we have had players from as far away as Suffolk and Queens.
Practices, which consist of a warm-up session, skill training and a scrimmage, are held every Saturday morning at New Hyde Park fields. The scrimmages are divided into two separate games, based on skill level.
We have a wonderful mix of teenage and adult coaches who work with the players one- on-one. They are typically coaches or players from our intramural and travel programs. We also get students from the NHP Memorial High School Key Club.
Due to the continuing, generous efforts of our club's annual golf outing committee and supporters, sufficient money is raised each year to enable us to offer this program at no fee!
All LIJSL clubs, which have a program, get together each season to participate in league tournaments held in Plainview (P/OB) and New Hyde Park (NHP). These games are divided into three skill levels. The spring P/OB Tournament is supplemented with a barbecue. Each player receives a trophy and a tee shirt. At the fall NHP Tournament each player is awarded a medallion and tournament patch, and refreshments (hot dogs, soda, snacks) are served. The LIJSL also sponsors a photographer to take pictures of each team.
While the NHP program has no restrictions, the Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) requires that all players be ambulatory. This rule applies only when we play in one of the league tournaments.
The year is culminated with a dinner for the players, their families and coaches at a Long Island hotel. Each player's dinner is paid for by the LIJSL. They all receive raffle gifts. In addition, each player is awarded a trophy and a copy of the team picture taken at the fall NHP Tournament.
